Organic cotton-related FAQs
Are your products 100% organic cotton?
Yes. All of our organic bed linen is made from the finest natural 100% organic cotton. We only use Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton for our bedding. Organic cotton is cultivated using environmentally friendly methods and has a low impact on the environment. Organic cotton does not contain any genetically engineered substances or synthetic chemicals and it has been grown without pesticides. It promotes safe work and better livelihoods to keep farmers and their families safe. It also has the added benefit of being bio-degradable.
We have gone to great lengths to understand the supply chain, from seed to fabric, to make sure our sheets are made the right way. This traceability is important to us. You can sleep soundly knowing our cotton is hypoallergenic and 100% chemical free. Better for the environment, better for the farmers and their families, and better for you and your family.
What are the benefits of organic cotton?
This is a great question! Switching to organic cotton has a number of benefits for you, your family and your global neighbours. The environmental effects are astounding: farmers are able to grow cotton without the use of harmful chemicals and pesticides, preventing seepage and contamination into the groundwater that is so essential to the health and safety of local communities. This also means that you and your family can have a truly peaceful sleep, knowing that our bed linen is pure, grown naturally and provides opportunity for so many people. You can read more about the benefits of organic cotton here.
What is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)?
GOTS certification is the worldwide leading textile producing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain – from seed to fabric. Throughout the quality management process, it is ensured that at every stage no chemical pesticides, harmful bacteria or synthetic fertilisers have been used in the final product, allowing products to be internationally GOTS certified. You can read more about GOTS here.
How is GOTS socially responsible as well?
To be GOTS certified, social criteria based on the key norms of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) must be met by all processors and manufacturers. These cover minimum wages, working hours, no child labour, no discrimination, as well as safe and hygienic work conditions. This, as well as the environmental side of organic cotton, is critical to the quality of life of all the people (and their families) along the journey from plant to duvet (or pillow case or fitted sheet). This aspect is really important to us – it’s only fair! We’ve written a blog post about this.
What is Oeko-Tex®?
All of our products are Oeko-Tex certified, as well as GOTS certified. Oeko-Tex® is a worldwide certification system for environmentally friendly and socially responsible production facilities in the textile and clothing industry.
There are various different levels of Oeko-Tex® certification, but the most common accreditation is the Oeko-Tex® 100 Standard. This is used for testing and certification of textile products.
Products marked with the Oeko-Tex® label “Confidence in Textiles” provide effective protection against allergenic substances, as well as harmful chemicals and synthetics. You can read more about Oeko-Tex® here. We’ve also written a blog post on this subject.
What thread count is Linen Quarter’s bed linen?
Our signature percale weave bed linen is woven to a 200 thread count, delivering a breathability and crispness that will instantly make this your go to bedding. At this thread count, the fabric remains lightweight and breathable. We believe this thread count is the sweet spot as it delivers the optimal level of comfort, softness and of course that all-important luxury feel.
Why percale weave?
The threads for a percale weave fabric are woven in a one thread over and one thread under pattern, creating a soft, light and airy finish. It is beautifully soft, lightweight and breathable, ensuring your temperature stays regulated and perfectly balanced. It is also very durable. When you think of luxury hotel bed linen, it is a percale weave. It becomes softer and more beautiful with time and use. It was an obvious choice for us.
What is the difference between Oxford and standard pillow cases?
Oxford pillow cases have a 5 centimetre border of fabric around the edge of the pillowcase. A standard pillowcase has no border at all, with no feature around the edge. The proper name for a standard pillow case is ‘Housewife pillow case’, but we prefer not to use that description!
How deep are the fitted sheets?
All of our fitted sheets are 34 centimetres deep and will fit mattresses up to that depth. Do not worry if you do not have a deep mattress. They will still be a nice snug fit as they are elasticated all the way round for a little extra flexibility and the extra fabric can be kept neatly under the mattress.
How do your duvet covers fasten?
All of our duvet covers fasten at the foot end with hidden sewn buttons and button holes for a neat and tailored look. They can be hidden inside the cover itself so you can’t see them at all. The corners are hemmed to approximately 15 centimetres in, so your duvet is neatly contained and won’t pop out at the corners.
Are the pillow cases sold in pairs or separately?
If you are buying a duvet cover set, this will have 2 pillow cases included (for double, king and super king sizes), or 1 pillow case if you buy a single duvet case set. We also sell pillow case sets, which come in pairs with two matching pillow cases in a packet.
Do Linen Quarter sheets wrinkle?
All of our products are made from natural fibres. This is why your 100% organic cotton sheets may wrinkle more easily than conventional “wrinkle-resistant” bed sheets that have been soaked with nasty chemicals. Always be cautious of a fabric that’s wrinkle-free.
Is your packaging environmentally friendly?
We aim to be as environmentally friendly as we can. Our products are packaged in re-usable organic cotton fabric bags, which are made using off cuts from production to minimise waste. These are great to reuse as storage bags for e.g. shoes, toiletries, laundry, or even as a gym, travel or grocery bag. If you have a creative way to use your Linen Quarter fabric bag(s), please let us know!
How should I care for my bedding FAQs
What is the best way to care for my Linen Quarter products?
It is important to care for your bed linen, to ensure it lasts longer. Cotton fibres are delicate and require looking after.
We recommend washing at 40ºC, but it can be washed at 30ºC. Lower temperatures save energy, helping to be kinder to the environment. We appreciate that some people like to wash their bed linen at higher temperatures, but this will damage the natural fibres over time.
If you are tumble drying your bed linen, tumble dry on a low heat and remove promptly from the dryer.
We always recommend you follow the care label instructions. You can read a recent blog that we wrote on this important subject. The secret to how to care for your bedding and keeping it looking great is really simple: just wash them the right way, every time.
Do I need to wash my bed linen before using?
All of our bed linen is Oeko-Tex certified, meaning no harmful chemicals or synthetics have been used in its production or the product’s finishing. This means you can use our products without washing them first. However, to get the best out of your new bed linen, we would recommend washing it first as it’s made slightly over-sized.
How much will my bed linen shrink?
Our bed linen is sent to you slightly over-sized to account for the slight, natural shrinkage that will occur after their first wash. This is completely normal natural shrinkage, so do not worry. This is important as our production process is free of any harmful chemical sizing agents such as formaldehyde or other laundering practices to pre-shrink the final product. We avoid these steps to remain true to our Organic and Oeko-Tex certified standards. This also minimises the environmental impact of production by using less water, heat and other additives. If your sheets fit looser in the beginning, rest assured that after the first few washes your sheets will have the perfect fit. Bed linen shrinks around 5% the first few times you wash them. We have allowed for this shrinkage.
How can additional shrinkage be prevented?
Stay away from excessive heat. This means that you should not use hot water in the washing machine, use high heat or over-dry. Exposure to too much heat will also cause premature wear.
